Industry experience

10th - 21st February 2020

Placement - Factory Films

My two weeks at Factory Films introduced me to the world of an independent production company. I spent the majority of my time with them researching for shows going out on Sky Arts as well as running errands, compiling and completing production paperwork and logging. I also had the opportunity to assist on an interview for the 2020 Glyndebourne Opera Cup (Sky Arts), providing me with valuable insight into the process of HETV.

27th - 31st January 2020

Placement - BBC Inside Out

I spent the majority of my time at Inside Out shadowing one of the producers. Prior to my work experience, I did not realise the majority of the outside filming was done solo, so it was insightful to see how a professional executed it. Having this 1 on 1 learning experience allowed me to ask questions and learn as I go along. Being a kinesthetic learner this was extremely valuable to me.

12th December 2019

Camera Operator - Sky News 2019 General Election coverage

A paid opportunity I gained through my university course, I was part of a two-man camera team based at the Hastings and Rye constituency on election night. We were responsible for filming the count and reporting the results back to the Sky news desk back in London. Though our footage was not used on the main program, as our count coincided with both Jeremy Corbyn and Jo Swinson's seats, it was streamed through their online services.

Testimonials

I think that Ella has learnt more about the process of commissioning as well as the processes in pre-production within a production company. Ella specifically worked well on research tasks and presented them clearly back to members of staff. Ella’s general understanding of being in an office and the certain roles everyone plays within the team. I also feel she improved with her communication throughout the two weeks and learning when the best time to approach colleagues with questions depending on how busy they were. Several members of our team were very impressed with her research skills and how these improved after completing several jobs. We loved having Ella in the office, she had great energy, took real pride in her work, and her initiative with helping the various teams is something we really look for in students placements and she should have been proud of how hard she worked.

Hollie Trist - Factory Films

Ella got to attend the majority of the filming for the Roller Derby piece. She was always on hand to help and had a thirst for knowledge. She had a can-do attitude and a passion for documentary making. After speaking with Ella I feel seeing TV being made helped Ella get a deeper understanding of the medium and ideas to take forward and use in her own practice. Ella had a good foundation of skills and attending the filming for Roller Derby gave her a chance to see how these skills can be used in a professional environment thus allowing her to take things to the next level on her own documentary.
